HUMANistic Design Variable:

During my study and practice of architecture, I have relentlessly researched technological catalyst that can influence design with both positive and negative outcomes. The result of my involvement; a mass acquisition of knowledge for the tools which architecture uses to propel the contemporary discourse on formal language and variation. The "humanistic design variable" is a term defined by a pre-digital understanding of space and the traditional hands-on methods used to produce architectural documents and models. The swift introduction of digital technology into the industry has created a divide among generations of architects resulting in a lost appreciation of the craft associated with the profession. With the learning curve of these new technologies beginning to plateau, as well as improved "human to digital" interface devices entering the market, we will see a reconnection and appreciation towards the past methodologies of the industry. It is my desire to take the knowledge and skill sets gained and reintegrate the humanistic design variable into design based technology, not visa versa, through research, theory and application.

The predictable infrastructure which we have built our once free form design profession on has reached its capacity if not assisted soon. Few issues or systems in today’s society have the ability to be tracked and predicted because of the ever expanding variables that are inherent to them. Design is one of these based on its cultural influences and complexities. The path of technology on the other hand, a topic that now plays the largest role in shaping our being, consequently possesses the trait of being predetermined because of its methodical and numeric nature. Design has become the orchestration of processes so tools can forge the end resultant. The solution, the reapplication of the humanistic design variable in a way that pays homage to traditional means but follows the methods of the contemporary.
